Your guide,

Ms. D

  • I'm a special educator at a small high school in Wilmington, Vermont, always looking for ways to "re-teach" the skills that may be lost along the way if not practiced. But sometimes all the practice in the world doesn't teach the concept. How do I know 2 + 2 is 4? I know because those numbers represent units: two apples, two books, two flowers. But two thousand flowers divided into how many bouquets with an equal number of four varieties tied up with three different colors of ribbon sold in five days in ten stores at a cost decreasing daily by 15% from $20....well, you get the picture or maybe, you don't. Read on.

Welcome to Designer Math

This site is the result of years of teaching math skills to students who didn’t quite “get it” the first time.

Neither did I.

I don't think it was math phobia. I think it was having a brain better wired for spelling Pythagoras than understanding what he knew. Take these folks, for example:

MATH GENIUSES?

But what if math was combined with interests I had: stargazing, sewing, music, cooking, sailing?

Maybe that would have worked better for me and maybe that would work for students needing to refresh or acquire those math skills they need, not only in school but in life.

So, if this sounds intriguing, you'll chose an area and design your own project. We’ll find out together what math you’ll need and where to go to get it.
